Congratulations to the NYT. Great reporting and research. Facts and links make fully sense. However, I am wondering if the Times is giving a blank check to reporters ( in letting them do this wonderful job) as a help to its supporter, Mexican billionaire, Carlos Slim. I'm writing this only because Mr. Slim is not only the owner of giant Telmex, but also of many retail businesses (such as Sanborns, a Mexican retailer) that have been affected by Wal-Mart's success in Mexico. It is important to remember that 2-3 years ago, the Times got a 250 million dollars loan, interest free, from Mr. Slim. This money helped the Times to keep afloat despite its financial trouble. Other help Mr. Slim's company, Saks Fifth Avenue, gave to the Times was to keep its advertisement account in the Times as one of the biggest in the paper's portfolio.
Like many other readers, I hope The Times remains free to research and report on the dishonest practices of Slim's companies. For example, his monopoly of the cellphone business in MX that makes Mexicans to pay for the most expensive per minute rate in the planet. The corrupt practices Mr. Slim used to acquire Telmex from the government, aided by ex-fugitive President Carlos Salinas de Gortary, etc.
It would be worthy for Times' readers to find also reporting on these issues.
