Without radio I think i'd really go nuts on my 12 hour overnight sojourns. Now, most radio really is bad. Music that gets recycled every 45 minutes, and misinformation mixed with appeals to the basest qualities in people.
Thank God there are exceptions, and when I say thank God I guess I mean thank God's children who do the good not well paid (or not paid at all) work at some excellent community based listener supported radio stations here in New York and in many other places.
I ought to be ashamed myself because I free load and promise I'm gonna kick in some dues.
In New York City we have the grad daddy of them all WBAI. Some shows on WBAI make me angry, but overall WBAI is indispensable.
Culture, in this case particularly music, is what makes us human beings and not animals. The radio stations that preserve the best of music deserve my thanks at the least.
WQXR presents classical music and commentary that equals a music appreciation class, and it is keeping alive the flame of classical music in New York. I especially appreciated the two weeks of non stop Bach. I really wish there were an all the time Bah radio station.
WBGO presents the greats of jazz and keeps that precious candle glowing here in the NYC area.
WSOU gives you mainly but not only real head banging music and brings on new bands.
WFUV is the greatest contemporary music station out there in the opinions of many of my passengers and I have no reason not to agree.
It's been my pleasure to introduce these stations to people who have never before heard them
