Some really weird shit happened to me early early early this morning. You know I drive taxi in NYC on the night shift.
I was in that tired mode where I am making moves with no strategy to them and not even looking for passengers in reality. Tired and ready to turn in.
I was rolling in this mindless state down Central Park West half imagining that Hail O would send me a fantastic long shot up to Westchester or something, My mind went back to "the day" the movie "Hair" and such ancient nostalgia. I thought about the Weather Underground who were a band of angry righteous kids mainly Jewish and not poor who went to war with the United States of America back i 1969. I suppose that they were influenced a lot by their beliefs about the Nazi crimes that were committed against Jews, I surely was in those days,
They were righteously enraged that the USA was murdering millions of people in Indochina and also that the government was murdering in their beds members of the Black Panther Party.
One of their acts of war took place in front of the Museum of Natural History. They set about to demolish a racist and bellicose statue honoring Theodore Roosevelt and his toughness and Caucasianity.
What I remember reading and hearing about it is of course the bomb did not even budge the statue but it caused a lot of property damage in the area. It was set off in the early early hours before dawn on a date I cannot locate on wiki or Google and that;s part of the wierdness that happened.
Now I have a brand new cell phone that has so many features I don't know what to do I have a camera that has a flash that I don't know how to work and whose capabilities I want to explore. So after googling in vain for the Weather Underground and this particular incident I pulled up in front of the museum. What clearly to me was an unmarked police car pulled up in back of me and soon to follow a white truck, I waked up to the statue, tried to take a useable photo of it (railed there) and as I walked back to my taxi I saw that the car that had followed me was now in front of the taxi, There were three people in it all tapping away at portable devices that at a glance were similar to my new smart phone.
I drove off and returned a few minutes later. They were still there and they definitely noticed me. If they or their employers are curious as to what I was up to here it is: Back in those days I was supposedly a sympathizer with communism, the Black Panthers and the Vietnamese, especially their leader Ho Chi Minh but I thought that the Weather people were a bunch of rich spoiled clowns who were alienating the working class. I've come around to a more sympathetic view of these kids and realize that they had nothing to do with the fact that the "white working class of that time culd not have given a rat's ass for the Vietnamese or the Black Panthers and it was a desperate question of "what to do about all this?"
So I wanted to find out what was the anniversary of this attack? What were the long forgotten reports and detials? Could I take a picture of the damned statue and blog about it?
If these spooks or whatever they were working at that hour noticed I limp when I walk, and the possibilities of me engaging in any sort of violence are nil
