I used to have a blog called Matthew Daus is a Horse's Patootie. Why I obliterated it is not the subject of this post. O.ne of the things that inspired the blog was Daus' even considering the Turkish car and my opinion was shaped by the simple fact that Karsan had absolutely no presence here. I envisioned a need for a recall. Would they fly the cars to Turkey? My blog was the only publication that pointed this out. Very soon after it was announced that the Turkish van eas being taken out of consideration. Karsan then announced that it would open a factory in Brooklyn and I strongly endorsed it but it was too late.
The reason the Taxi of Tomortow became just another harebrained scheme from Michael Bloomberg was that taxi owners, who would have to recruit the drivrrs and maintain the vehicles were given zero input so they went to court and won their case. Although the taxi moguls are mainly rich Jewish men they get no respect from people you might guess would feel connection with them. Well, the taxi moguls invented "the world's best investment on earth" and most never got an MBA. This disrespect prooved costly to Nissan but Karsan really lucked out.

Just yesterday, we reported that one of the finalists for New York’s Taxi of Tomorrow, the V1 model by Turkish automaker Karsan, would be built in Brooklyn, creating up to 800 local jobs. Unfortunately, the good news was short lived. The Taxi and Limousine Commission has rejected the model, based on a study that found that the design was too high risk. The New York Times reports that “a review raised concerns about whether the Turkish company, untested in the American market, could reliably execute the high-concept product it had designed.” This leaves theFord Transit Connect and the Nissan NV200 as possible choices. Mayor Bloomberg is expected to announce the winner sometime this week.

Automakers from around the world submitted their designs for a cab that was safe, offered a small environmental impact, complied with Americans with Disabilities Act requirements and was physically smaller than the tried-and-true Crown Victoria. Well, the votes are officially in, and a cab from the Turkish company Karsan is the winner.
Around 66 percent of respondents either liked or loved the design of the Karsan V1, and that was enough to seal the vehicle's fate as the people's choice for the Taxi of Tomorrow. The V1 boasts a number of appealing unique features, including a panoramic glass roof and wheelchair ramps on both sides of the vehicle for easy access. It's also a hybrid, which means that cabbies can expect to save fuel in the future if the commission picks the V1 as the city's new cab, and it is easily adaptable to other fuel sources as needed, including diesel, natural gas or fully electric.
The city is likely to take the results of the survey into consideration as it makes a final decision later this year, though popularity with the public provides no guarantees that NYC cabbies will soon be talking Turkey.
