Lyft, an outlaw taxi service, has got an informal "go ahead" to roll out it's service in New York. As far as I am aware neither the City Council nor the Taxi and Limousine Commission have met to discuss and vote on legalizing Lyft.
Backed by Mega dollars including an investment by Michael Bloomverg Lyft is promising free rides for two weeks starting July 17.
