Jonathan Van Meter is a contributing editor at Vogue and New York magazine and he wrote Anthony Weiner and his wife Huma Weiner a very sympathetic interview in The New York Times .
While Anthony was busy courting, wedding and impregnating Huma he was also busy on the internet carrying on virtual flirtations with at least six women who are more or less half his age, one of them under eighteen years old.
What Weiner did when he sent out the photo of his erect sex organ was hurt the Democratic Party and to an extent weaken the safety net that millions depend upon to survive. He was irresponsible and in my opinion he not only was betraying Huma and his constituents and his party but he was also toying with the affections and emotions of several young women and one girl. He was abusing his office as a congressman to toy with these people. My read of the interview was that Weiner is still very much in love with himself and that what he regrets is getting caught.
Now he wants to run for mayor. Is he serious? He has these four million campaign dollars and a deadline for spending them. He would probably want his legacy to close out with a hard fought battle for mayor in which he raises some good issues rather than a closing act in which he is talking about his erect sex organ to millions of people. He probably knows that his chances of winning are not good.
This is a good time for me to challenge Weiner, so here goes: Use your fourteen million dollars to fight for an immediate clenup of PCBs from our public schools. Use the money as a bully pulpit to fight stop and frisk. Be a mensch Anthony.
Bury this shame that your arrogance brought down on yourself and people you say you are about.
