Officially taxis are driven more safely and are involved in fewer accidents than are other cars driven in New York City.
So then, New Yorkers and Manhattanites in particular, offiically what your own eyes tell you and what other people you know tell you is wrong. Clik on the link. I'm not making this up, just like I did not invent Senator Crapo.
Why then do you not believe this factoid? Maybe because it is not and could not be true?
It's just anecdotal evidence that we really have because as drivers know, many accidents do not get reported, admittedly especially minor ones where no one demands or requires an ambulance. Reporting a minor accident makes not much sense because the report results in higher insurance rates and for taxi drivers these reports can add up to the loss of a livelihood for up to one year.
So the truth about taxi accidents is not really understood in any exact way by anyone. Strangely enough fatalities and serious injuries are not tracked by classification such as taxi.
So, dear passengers take my advice: buckle your seat belt. If you get into a taxi accident let an emergency room doctor tell you that you don't need medical attention if you feel even the slightest discomfort. As everyone knows immediately after a trauma people lose their judgement and the perception of pain itself is masked by adrenaline. Not feeling pain and not being hurt are not the same thing.
Don't say I didn't tell you....
